Basketball: A Game For All Seasons

High school students talented in basketball with competitive scores and profiles often apply for college basketball scholarships.    This is a form of in which schools admit applicants based on their athletic abilities.  The NCAA sets the guidelines by which the students are expected to perform, on what particular basis they can be admitted as well as the standards by which schools can grant a college sports scholarship.  Both college basketball and the NBA generally follow the same basic rules.

During the holiday season of 1891, the administration at the School for Christian Workers in Springfield, Massachusetts faced a problem. A high level of energies was brewing among the students. They were studying to join the work of the Young Men’s Christian Association, training for administrative posts, were causing difficulties in daily school life.  The students were bored with the standard winter consisting of gymnastics and other typical indoor recreational activities offered at the school.

The institution prohibited play of the more dangerous games of indoor football and rugby for safety reasons. The school athletic director then asked his physical education instructor, James Naismith, to develop an activity that was safer than the established sports of the day, yet which would require the players to expend their pent-up energy. Naismith was given two weeks to create such a sport.  The new game Naismith rendered to his director was basketball.
