A little help wtih some basketball rules?

Hello i am a sophomore in high school and i recently picked up the sport basketball. I have been watching games and I’m catching on quickly about the rules and every thing like that but i do have a question. When a player is shooting a foul where do the defending players stand like do the centers stand closet to the basket???
