Shooting Basketball Photography

Question Objective: 18-200 or 70-300mm?

I really started to come into the picture and do not know which end is best for my interest: I Pictures (couples and children) and shoot the basketball games (I have access to the press so you can actually closer to the action). I have heard very good things in the objective 18-200, but I want to know if the 70-300 best suit my needs? Please help me decide. The cost is not as important as how often you use the lens. BTW, I already standard 18-55 lens (non VR) and 50 mm 1.4. Thanks in advance, and have always responded to my best reward Q!

Unless your shooting things hundreds of meters below, a lens 300 will bring big problems. For example, the lowest Fstop be around 4 or 5.6 or less. This can be taken during the day OK, but within the drive you nuts and will not be able to do so with a Fast shutter open to get a good exposure. Another thing is to have a target of 300 means that Minimum shutter speed is 1 / 300 second. Now, I understand that a target of 300 in which close to the action, but pays a high price. The aim will unwieldy. what is bad for the sport and the angle is narrow, so you will not have much action. Of course, a lens 300 will not even begin to concentrate for at least 6 feet, but close to the action as in basketball is a big problem. I understand that this is a zoom and is not always 300, but remains a target 300. It will be a goal too heavy, no matter how. A 18-200 is a better option. Opens again, is not so heavy, is broader and more appropriate to close at like basketball shots. It will be a "faster" lens too, so you can use a higher shutter speed and still get good exposure. If you want to do portraits of great light, and opens like a 300 is very inadequate for that. Does it really be 20 feet away just to put all in a portrait? I can not image that anyone buying the portrait lens and waited. EDIT: If you buy the 300, but does not use 300, but closer to 200 or Why what do you buy?
